Would You Bathe In Your Swimming Pool?

Shower imageWe’re all familiar with the variety of ways available to remove chlorine from our drinking water: the pitchers, the filters attached to the kitchen faucet, refrigerator and icemaker filters, as well as whole house filtration systems. But have you ever thought about your shower?

Since you’re not getting your drinking water from your shower, it probably hasn’t crossed your mind to address chlorine in your shower. But if you’ve experienced dry, itchy/flaky skin or dry, brittle hair after showering or bathing, chlorine is the likely culprit. In some areas, running a shower brings a noticeable chlorine smell to the room, nearly as strong as a swimming pool. Is this healthy?

As reported by Dr. Lance Wallace of the EPA, “Showering is suspected as the primary cause of elevated chloroform in nearly every home because of the chlorine in the water. Chloroform levels increase up to 100 times during a ten-minute shower in residential water.” And, according to The American Journal Of Public Health, “Up to 2/3 of the harmful effects of chlorine are due to inhalation and skin absorption while showering.”

Doesn’t sound good, does it? So, what can we do about it?

If you’re tired of the effects of chlorine on your skin and hair, have itchy skin, or simply want to reduce the smell of chlorine when you shower, we recommend a shower filter. Sprite makes some of the best shower filters we’ve had the pleasure of testing. In fact, several of our team members have Sprite shower filters in their homes and swear they couldn’t do without them!

Naturally, there are more brands than Sprite, and more options than you might think. There’s filters built into a shower head, filters that fit into the handle of a hand shower, filters that fit inline with your current hand shower hose, and one specially made for baby. Of course, if you filter your whole house, you don’t need to do anything else to your shower. The option that works best for you depends on your water quality and your home. For example, a renter might need to install a filtered shower head since alterations to the home are not allowed, where a homeowner might opt for a whole house filtration system to keep everything all together.
